Tour Pey-Berland à Bordeaux
Tall and beautiful as a supermodel, the striking Gothic Pey-Berland Tower – bell tower of Saint André Cathedral – is the best way to get a sense of Bordeaux’s World Heritage assets, and considerable urban sprawl. Built in the 1400s and once home to an eight-tonne super bell called Ferdinand-André, the belfry gives unparalleled views almost to the sea. Which just about makes up for the 230-step climb it takes to get up there.

Chez Hortense
Head out to Cap Ferret, the chic beach resort on the Atlantic coast, and get a table at Chez Hortense. This beachside restaurant looks out onto Arcachon Bay, where you can watch oyster boats and pleasure boats crawling up and down, and over to the 100-metre high sand dune, the Dune de Pyla, on the far side of the bay. House specialities are mussels and chips, washed down with local dry white wine from Entre deux Mers.

Arcachon
Desperate for some beach time, after all that sleep-inducing grape juice? Just an hour to the southwest is the charming Victorian commune of Arcachon, a destination for holidaymakers for the last 150 years. Being a French resort, sporting activities abound, from sailing and wind surfing on the Bassin d'Arcachon (Arcachon Bay) to full-on paragliding on Europe’s biggest sand dune (Dune de Pyla), at the south end of the bay. For bucket-and-spade types, or those with young families, the beach on the town’s waterfront provides sheltered spots for swimming. Kids of all ages will go wild for the local Aqualand (www.aqualand.fr).

Mascarons
While you’re walking around the city, don’t forget to look upwards... on most of the traditional buildings, you’ll see a funny collection of gargoyles looking back down at you. These stone carved faces are called mascarons, and were very popular in the 18th century, usually revealing something about the person who owned the house; so expect to see a lot of faces with grapes instead of hair! And for a great souvenir, you can buy a chocolate version of these pieces of Bordeaux heritage, also called Bordeaux mascarons.
